PART TWO:

Black Gravity

Depending on where Mohammed went in Berlin, his injuries were different.

In Warschauer Strasse, on the bridge overlooking the train,

He sprained his left ankle;

As he walked in Treptower Park, he dislocated his right wrist;

In Spandau, he found himself convulsed with a stomach ulcer.

In other parts of the city, his wounds were more dramatic.

He avoided Sonnenallee,

Since three years ago,

Just by standing at a set of crossroads,

He’d broken his nose.

He stayed away, too, from Senefelderplatz, since that’s where he’d fractured his skull

The second he’d stepped out of the U-bahn.

No-one had been nearby that day;

It was as if he’d been attacked by the air.

Each Kiez of his town frowned upon him, it seemed.

His friends, amused then concerned by his never-ending series of ailments,

Suggested he attend sessions with healers or seers,

Something to drive away the malignant spirits

That seemed to envelop him within the city limits.

Nothing worked, till he stumbled across the office of a black doctor,

A cheerful middle-aged man from Munich

Whose beard was the playful grey of ocean spray.

The doctor’s diagnosis was bold, to say the least;

He said that Berlin had different weather for those of African heritage,

That’s why its wind brought him wounds,

Why its rain raised bruises on his skin.
